Sparkling Sarah
Aglaonema spp.
Chinese Evergreen
Light Details
Place in moderate indoor light, such as a bright room set back from the window or near a north/east exposure. It will usually tolerate lower light than many tropicals, but growth slows and color may fade if it is kept too dim.
Watering Details
Let the top 1 to 2 inches dry between waterings. It handles average home conditions well but does best with steady moisture. Check the potting mix before watering. In most homes this means watering when the top 1 to 2 inches feel dry, then watering thoroughly until excess drains out. Empty cachepots and saucers so roots are not left sitting in water.
Humidity Details
Average household humidity is usually fine, but the plant will appreciate steadier moisture in the air. Keep it away from strong HVAC drafts and use a humidifier if the room stays very dry.
Soil Details
Use a high-quality indoor potting mix with added perlite or bark if you want a bit more airflow. The mix should hold some moisture but still drain freely.
Temperature
Keep warm, ideally 65 to 85°F.
Feeding Details
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer.
Grooming / Training
Remove aging yellow leaves at the base. Rotate occasionally for even shape.
Repotting
Repot every 2 to 3 years or when crowded.
Common Issues
Yellow lower leaves can be age or excess water. Pale, washed-out foliage usually means too little light for colorful cultivars.
Seasonal Notes
Water a bit less in winter and protect from chills.
What Not To Do
Do not expose it to cold drafts.
Safety Details
Toxic to Pets/Humans. Keep out of reach of pets. Avoid ingestion and wash hands after handling if sap or tissue is irritating.
